Phillips Percussion Instructors - Mr. Elisha Powell III & Mr. Robert Williams Section Leaders - Dominique Harris & Aaron Sturgis Welcome to the home of the Virginia State University Drumline, the notorious battery that powers the Marching Trojan Explosion. The ensemble is a "show-style" drumline composed of snare drums, cymbals, quints, and tonal bass drums that usually numbers between 20-30 percussionists. Our musicality ranges from typical "funk", which is found with most HBCU drumlines, to our rudimental sound that has been compared to the level of drum corps. While experimenting with more technically-advanced material and still playing our standard cadences, our drumline prides itself in merging the traditional with contemporary drumming, thus providing the best of both worlds to our audiences. We mainly perform with the marching band at parades, football games, and halftime shows, but we also get to set the stage for various "battle of the bands" and drumline exhibitions across the country. Over the years, the ensemble has established itself as a top-tier drumline and we are dedicated to annually continue our path of excellence. However, more important than establishing ourself as a section, we strive to improve the band as a whole with balanced sound, precise tempo, and supporting instrumentation for selected tunes and musical pieces. Our repertoire is incomparable to other drumlines and with that said, it is clear to say that we are the epitome of "rhythm and motion".
